In one of the most crowded and competitive seasons in recent Broadway history, the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” emerged Tuesday morning with a leading 13 nominations for the 77th annual Tony Awards.
The semi-autobiographical musical, with music by American singer Alicia Keys, is among the five nominees for the Tony Award for best musical.
“Stereophonic,” a new play that charts the highs and lows of a fictional 1970s rock band on the cusp of superstardom, also earned 13 nods. Written by David Adjmi, it features music by Will Butler, a former member of the Canadian rock band Arcade Fire.
An immersive production of the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret” earned nine nominations, the most of this season’s musical revivals, while “Appropriate” was the most nominated play revival, with eight nods.
Big-name stars were among the nominees, including Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne, Jonathan Groff and Canadian actor Rachel McAdams.
The Tony Award nominations were announced live from New York City by former winners Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The awards ceremony is set to be held at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on June 16. Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will host the event for the third consecutive year.
