Watch: Broadcaster Rod Black calls his son’s base hit in MLB debut in heartwarming TV moment
The longtime Canadian sports announcer was speaking to a sideline reporter from his seat in the stands when his son Tyler Black — who was making his MLB debut — got his second hit of the night.
In a heartwarming moment captured on a live interview Tuesday at the Milwaukee Brewers game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the longtime Canadian sports announcer was speaking to a sideline reporter when his son Tyler Black — who was making his MLB debut — got his second hit of the night.
Like the seasoned pro that he is, the senior Black jumped in with the play by play.
“There’s a base hit to right field for my boy Tyler Black. There you go, oh there you go. Two for two,” Black exclaimed, throwing in some well-timed birthday wishes to his wife Nancy.

As the camera panned to where the family was seated, Brewers reporter Sophia Minnaert described the broadcaster having tears in his eyes.
“It’s awesome. I think we’re going to start drinking heavily,” Black said, amid laughter from the broadcasting crew. “We love Milwaukee. We’re never leaving.”
Tyler Black, ranked the No. 46 prospect in baseball by MLB.com entering this season, was called up by the Brewers earlier in the day. He entered the game in the first inning as a replacement for the injured Gary Sánchez.
The 23-year-old Black ended up with a single and double in four at-bats, and scored a run to help the Brewers to an 8-2 win.
It was a big day for a player who wasn’t even assured of any playing time on his first day in the lineup.
“I just kind of strapped it on and said ‘here we go,’ ” he said after the game. “I wouldn’t want it any other way, honestly.”
Minnaert showed Black a video clip of his dad calling his play from the stands.
“It’s cool,” Black said, adding he called his parents the night before while they were in Cancun.
“They were able to hop on a flight early this morning, so I’m really lucky they’re here, for sure.”
